Seventeen synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) detected on the illicit drug market and considered a potential threat to public health were evaluated in vitro to verify their activity at the CB1 receptor. In Sweden, this evidence-based assessment considers toxicological data and potential health risks when determining whether a substance should be controlled. Although the investigation focused on compounds identified between 2019 and 2020, the methodology demonstrates how rapid generation of pharmacological data can accelerate regulatory decision-making. This approach has improved the preparedness of Swedish authorities to respond to newer generations of synthetic cannabinoids, which remain among the most commonly encountered classes of new psychoactive substances.

The same strategy can be extended to other categories of NPS. Ongoing collaborative efforts now include investigations using cell-based systems to evaluate compounds acting on opioid, serotonergic, and GABAergic receptors.
