A dangerous combination of war, organised crime and geopolitical tension

Europe is facing an increasingly complicated security environment. Russia’s continuing war against Ukraine, growing tensions between Moscow and Western governments, cyberattacks, sabotage and organised criminal networks are creating a situation in which events that might once have appeared separate can increasingly overlap.

One particularly worrying question is whether the expansion of organised drug trafficking and other criminal activity could contribute to wider instability between Russia and the West. There is, however, an important distinction: there is no evidence that illegal drugs are themselves causing a potential Third World War. Drug trafficking is better understood as one part of a much larger European security problem involving organised crime, corruption, illicit finance, border security and geopolitical competition.

The war in Ukraine remains the central European security crisis

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine transformed Europe’s security environment. The conflict remains active, while diplomatic efforts continue intermittently. On 7 September 2026, the Kremlin said it did not rule out restarting peace negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States, although no specific timetable was announced.

Could the war become a wider European conflict?

A wider conflict could develop through a series of incidents rather than through an immediate declaration of war. European governments have imposed sanctions, while NATO members have increased defence preparedness. At the same time, Russia and Western governments accuse one another of escalating the confrontation.

Is World War Three actually possible?

World War Three is possible in the sense that a direct conflict involving major nuclear powers would carry enormous risks, but possible does not mean inevitable. Nuclear deterrence, diplomacy, military communication and economic interests all create strong incentives to prevent a wider war.

The greatest danger may be miscalculation: a drone crossing a border, a cyberattack, a military aircraft being shot down, sabotage being incorrectly attributed, or a local incident triggering retaliation.

Drugs are a security problem — but not the cause of the war

Drug trafficking is a serious European problem, and organised crime has adapted to the changing environment created by war. Hybrid warfare, cyber threats and illicit finance add further complexity. However, there is no reliable evidence that illegal drugs in Western countries are the fundamental cause of Russia’s war or that Western drug consumption is directly driving the world towards World War Three.

What could prevent a wider war?

• Maintaining diplomatic communication between Russia, Ukraine, the United States and European governments.
• Strengthening border security and international action against trafficking and money laundering.
• Protecting critical infrastructure against cyberattacks and sabotage.
• Maintaining military communication to reduce the chance of accidents escalating.
• Distinguishing verified information from speculation and misinformation.
• Supporting credible peace negotiations where possible.

Conclusion: Europe at a crossroads

Europe is living through one of the most complicated security periods in generations. The war in Ukraine continues, organised crime networks adapt to changing borders and trade routes, and governments are increasingly concerned about cyberattacks, sabotage and hybrid threats.

Together these developments create genuine reasons for concern, but fear should not become misinformation. There is no evidence that drugs in the West are causing World War Three. The more credible concern is that organised crime, illicit finance, cyber threats, hybrid warfare and geopolitical confrontation can interact and make an already unstable security environment harder to control.

The objective should not be to predict World War Three. It should be to prevent it.
